The place had its original name Agios Theologos from the Greeks as referred from John the Theologian. By the 14th century, the city was renowned as the capital of emirate of Aydin while suring the Ottoman Empire the city has the name Ayasuluk. The last renaming of the city was in 1914. This was the time when the first incursions made within the region were done by the Seljuk Turks in the 12th century.
