Ephesus brought to life ! what a memorable tour !
stars5 out of 5, Reviewed on

Before booking the tour, as always we read through the Trip advisor reviews. From the moment we met our guide Professor ? ( his name now escapes me) we just knew we were in for a wonderful day. The "taxi" was a luxury mini coach with an excellent driver. Our host brought Ephesus to life, enabling both my wife and I to share in the whole experience of Ephesus. Words are inadequate to describe how we felt as we walked through history... you just have to go and live it deep within... a real emotional journey which we will never forget.

Ephesus Tours!!

Arrival at Izmir from Istanbul by plane. First to Isa Bey mosque where the columns are recycled from Artemis Temple remains. Then, to Ephesus Roman city tour. Bring along hats, umbrella and sunglasses. It was very hot even in September. Also, good walking shoes or comfy sandals. Turkey was part of the ancient Roman empire, so, there are many Roman ruins in Turkey such as Artemis, Ephesus, Hierapolis-Pamukkale, Side, Perge, Aspendos. News to me. Tour around Ephesus gave a glimpse of life back then. Pretty impressive. The Romans are great builders. The early mosaic at the marketplace floor, the communal toilets with central heating, the sewerage and drainage system, the marble street, the library, and the theatre. Pity it didn't last. Attacks by pirates, Turks, etc and then earthquakes scatter the civilized cities into field of ruins. After Ephesus, tour to Mary's house on top of hill overlooking Aegean sea. Tranquil atmosphere with surrounding olive trees and orchards. I can imagine Mary finding peace during her last years running away from Jerusalem after Christ was crucified and making her way there after 1000s kilometres. The house was reconstructed. Locals selling fresh peaches, figs, pomegranate outside. Pit stops for some fine carpets and leather fashion house.

Ephesus City Ruins

Celsus Library

Library of Ephesus was built in honor of the Roman Senator "Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus" by Celsus' son, Gaius Julius Aquila.

Terrace Houses

Near the Library of Celsus are luxurious elite houses, known as the "Slope Houses" for their location on the slopes.

Around the ruins

Artemis Temple

The Temple of Artemis is one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The temple is 425 feet high and is made up of expensive marbles.

St John Basilica

It is believed that St. John spent his last years near "Ephesus" and is buried in the Selcuk town in the southern hills.
